Netflix Case Study

What would it be like if Netflix had a spin-off for indie films?

What if there was a way for indie producers and film writers to get their films on a big name brand streaming service like Netflix? What would it look like, how would indie producers get there? What was the flow? How could they analyse their data?

First and foremost, when creators visit the landing site, it needs to have the same brand recognition as the main Netflix site (as of 2022). This would be a site that creators would find either from searching on google for keywords such as “Indie films online”, “how to get my film online”, “Netflix for indie creators”, etc. or from Netflix itself in the footer, for example.

In general, producers would be able to submit their films for free, with monetization scattered throughout the process. Things like Partnering with Netflix to get the iconic “N” symbol on their film’s thumbnail or signing up for a Netflix affiliate Masterclass could be potentials for gaining revenue from the indie creators.

An approval process would be necessary and the ability to resubmit and review multiple times. Since the quality of the indie film community ranges, there would need to be some sort of dedicated service to approve and deny films.

The main focus for new users on the creators site is to get their first film submitted. Other initiatives like signing up for a masterclass or partnering with Netflix could be advertised.

This page would be ever-changing. It would update with a quick view of their analytics for the films they are in the process of submitting and have films they have published with any necessary notifications or actions required to move forward.

When creators have a film published and gaining views, they would see on their dashboard various analytics. Alternatively to the normal Netflix, the voting system would be revived and viewers would be able to rate a film. This would be very important for these types of films, since they are not backed by huge industry giants like Universal or Disney, etc. Gaining visibility and different spotlight awards, themes each month for certain categories, etc are all ways that films can be filtered on the Netflix site we are all used to.

A note from the author: This quick case study was created for a design test while interviewing for a potential employer. A lot of flows are missing and a LOT more thinking would need to be hashed out to get this into an original concept.
